A small plant can make a desk feel more pleasant, but not every plant suits an office. The right one depends on the light you have, how often you remember to water and whether you share the space with pets. This guide explains how to choose a plant and a pot, and how to look after them.
Check your light first
Look at the amount of natural light your desk gets. Bright indirect light, near a window but out of harsh sun, suits many plants. Low light, such as a corner or a room with a small window, narrows your choices. Direct afternoon sun can scorch leaves.
Easy options for different conditions
- Low light: pothos, snake plant and ZZ plant tolerate dim rooms and irregular watering.
- Bright light: succulents and aloe vera like strong light and little water.
- Medium light: peace lily and spider plant are forgiving.
No plant thrives in complete darkness. If your desk has no daylight, a small grow light can help, or choose an artificial plant.
Pots and drainage
Choose a pot with a drainage hole and a saucer, since sitting water causes root rot. A pot a little bigger than the plant's root ball gives room to grow. Ceramic pots look good and are heavy enough to stay put, while plastic is light and cheap. If you like a decorative pot without a hole, keep the plant in a small nursery pot inside it, and remove it to water.
Watering
Overwatering is the most common mistake. Check the soil with your finger, and water only when the top inch or so is dry for most plants. Succulents need even less. Water thoroughly, then let any excess drain away.
Pets and children
Some common plants can be harmful if chewed. If you have pets or children, check each plant against a reliable list, or ask a vet or a nursery, before bringing it home.
Artificial plants
Artificial plants need no light or water, and they work in dark rooms. Choose ones with a natural finish and wipe off dust occasionally. They do not freshen the air, but they add greenery.
Size and position
A small plant, under about ten inches, fits a desk without crowding the keyboard. Keep it away from cables, and place it where you will not knock it over during calls.
Care routine
Rotate the plant every week so it grows evenly, wipe dust from the leaves and trim any yellowing ones. If a plant struggles, change one thing at a time, such as light or watering.
